My Dad passed away ten years ago to the day as I write this. I miss him all the time. Especially today. This is not only because of the anniversary, but also because today we are putting the finishing touches on the music video for the song I wrote for him after he passed.
While “You Called Me Kid” was written about my Dad, I dedicate it to both of my parents. As an adoptee, I am immensely grateful to my folks for their love, support, and sacrifice. In the song’s chorus, I sing:
You called me kid
And I can’t thank you enough for what you did
You called me kid
Never in this life could anybody find
A more generous or precious gift to give
In the video, directed by John Jeffcoat, we share family snapshots from my scrapbook along with crowdsourced photos celebrating parental figures of all stripes. (Thanks to everyone who submitted!)
I’m looking forward to performing “You Called Me Kid” this Friday (5/9/25) at The Moore Theater in Seattle as part of Dreaming in Analog, a night to celebrate the legacy of beloved music journalist Charles R. Cross. Through songs and excerpts from his many biographies, the night will span Charley’s life and career. I’m happy to share a song that will honor his role as a father.
I will be backed by a terrific band of Seattle all-stars: Chris Ballew, Jeff Fielder, Mike Musburger, Ben Smith, Andy Stoller and Dan Walker. As always, I will be joined by my trusty sidekick, Elaine Summers. The evening is presented by KEXP, SubPop and The Cobain Estate and will be hosted by John Richards.
I’m honored to share the bill with a cornucopia of Seattle music heavyweights: Sir Mix-a-Lot, Nancy Wilson, Chris Ballew (The Presidents of the United States of America), Jeff Fielder (Mark Lanegan), Molly Sides (Thunderpussy), Eva Walker (The Black Tones), Isaac Slade (The Fray), Caspian Coberly, Mary Lambert, Buckstein, John Roderick (The Long Winters), Shaina Shepherd, The Walking Papers, Hey Marseilles, and Ryan Waters.
Elaine and I have performed “You Called Me Kid” as a duo at our recent gigs. While I think the song goes over well acoustically, it really comes to life on the full-band album version. I could not be happier with how the track turned out. I’ve heard it a million times while working on the album, making the video and checking test pressings.1 I never tire of it. I’ll have more to say about the writing and recording process in future posts.
Regular readers of Love Songs Etc know that one of the perks of a paid subscription is new music before it’s released. So, all of you wonderful folks who support my efforts here financially will get to listen to and download the single soon. Everyone else will have to wait until 5/22.
Until then… Below are a few more stills from the forthcoming video.
Peace & Love Songs,
Pete
Test pressings arrived last week. More on this soon. SPOILER ALERT: Sounds fantastic!
