Pete, it doesn't get any better than the Thorns. I have worn that album out numerous times, but it always comes back strong. It should be in the Library of Congress (if it isn't there already). Thank you for doing it and coming to town that one time to play it.
Wow! I think that demo could pass for airplay today. I bought The Thorns as soon as it came out because of already being a fan of anything you had done. My favorite track was Long, Sweet Summer Night. That is until recently because I found the Thorns version of Silent Night. AMAZING!!!! ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!
That is so amazing! Thank you for sharing that fact. To me, pulling off Silent Night is like pulling off the Star Spangled Banner. You are blessed in so many ways and I feel blessed to be able to listen your music!
This is an amazing point of few. I purchased The Thorns album years ago. A lot of gems on that album. Funny thing, that’s how I discovered you. I’m a huge Shawn Mullins fan too . I’ve always wanted to go write with him.
Hi Tireless Pilrgrim- It's cool to hear that you discovered me thru The Thorns. You're not the only person I've heard that from. Mullins is a great artist and writer... I was honered to have the opportunity to work with him. Same goes for Sweet.
Pete, I’m sure they feel the same about you. I know I would love to co-write with you too. Under the Waves is one of those songs that I’ll never grow tired of.
Weird question if the day. If someone wrote a song and wanted to pitch it to another performer, how would that work?
thanks for the kind words about "Under the Waves." That song is very special to me... one of my favorites to sing.
Re: pitching music... the most conventional way that music gets submitted to big artists is thru music publishers. I have not done much pitching of my songs in that way or any other way for that matter so I can't really offer any useful thoughts on the topic. Sorry about that.
The whole album is great. “Never Learned” is another fav or the album.
I joined ASCAP a while ago just not having any luck. This is probably not the platform to ask about publishing stuff. Anywho, keep up the good work and looking forward to the other The Thorns pieces you will be highlighting.
I loved the Thorns single. when I first heard it on the radio in the car I was totally Ga-Ga over Find A Door, was a big fan of Sweet's Girlfriend and Sick Of myself and was familiar enough with Shawn to think that it was cool when I played across the street from him in San Francisco at The Boom-Boom Room when he did the Fillmore. I thought the vocal blend was extraordinary to say the least and it was a really good song that served the harmonies very well. Thanks for telling the tale!
I'm so glad you decided to share your experience in the Thorns. I was lucky enough to see them perform at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia. I songwriting is brilliant, and the harmonies are incredible. Too many great tunes to pick a favorite.
If I recall correctly The Thorns opened for The Jayhawks at the Bellyup Tavern in Solana Beach. I have a photo somewhere of you guys in your white overalls. Great show.
Eagles be like: I see you 👀 Thorns!
For some reason, this has never crossed my radar. I will have to find a copy of the album. Sounds good.
Hey Hawk 'n' Roll... I hope you dig it!
Yeah, great story and version of Blue Sky. Old school alt-country music vid! Fantastic Thorns cover of Blue always my preferred over Jhawks. -was
Thanks, Ward. That's high praise that you prefer our version to the Jayhawks!

Thanks for the kind words about The Thorns. Happy to have come to your town. :)

That demo did turn out sounding like a record. FUN FACT: We recorded that version of "Silent Night" in our dressing room at Royal Albert Hall!

Hi Dean. Happy to tell the tale! It's been fun looking back on those times.

I remember that night at The Birchmere. Thanks for the kind words.

I remember that show. I have some photos of us from that night too. Goofy fun we had with those suits.
Heck of a way to spend 2 years. Thanks for the demo Pete. I can't wait to hear the rest of the story.
You guys definitely caught 'lightning in a jar' with those songs.
Thanks, Jeff! Four more parts on the way... stay tuned!
