Songs that speak to my experiences as an adoptee are the cornerstones of my forthcoming album, Fade Away Blue. (Out 8/22/25)
The record opens with “You Called Me Kid,” a song of love and gratitude dedicated to my late parents. “Kid” was released as a single last month. If you haven’t already, check out these posts.
My new single, “Song for Barbara Ann,” addresses the other side of the adoption coin from “You Called Me Kid.” I will have more to say later about the ambiguous grief I experienced when I decided to search for my birth mother, only to discover she had died just months earlier.
For now, I’ll let the song and music video do the talking. (Lyrics below.)
The single can be heard wherever digital music is served.
Premium subscribers can download this video (Ultra HD) by visiting my rarities page.
Big thanks to the amazing team behind the video:
John Jeffcoat for directing, shooting and editing.
Eric Edwards, Ryan Davies, Ben Strickland, Bryce Stines, and Bobby Hougham at The New Blank for animation and compositing support.
Caitlin Jeffcoat for appearing in the reenactments.
Ryan St. James for production assistance.
Kristine Dahms for location and animal wrangling. (And cookies!)
DD Wigley for being the ‘dreammaker.’
I’ll have more to say later about the talented folks who brought the song to life in the studio. For now, a quick thanks to:
Paul Bryan for wearing multiple hats as co-producer, engineer, mixer, bassist and Chamberlinist.
Jay Bellerose for drumming and percussioning.
Lee Pardini for playing Paul’s beautiful old Steinway piano.
Elaine Summers for executive producing and co-writing.
Russ Fowler for recording the guitar and vocal.
I’ll be back in your inbox soon to share more about this song.
Until then…
Below are those lyrics I promised.
Peace & Love Songs,
Pete
SONG FOR BARBARA ANN
I’ve got your hazel eyes
And a streak that is blue
They say it’s uncanny
How much I remind them of you
I’ve got your photographs
And your old violin
And that makes a difference
Giving me glimpses of who you had been
And all I can do is keep singing for you
Pining for someone who I never knew
Hard to believe it was over before it began
I just wasn’t part of your plan
Barbara Ann
I went to Robin Hill
On the old Cheshire Farm
Where lilies grow wild
That’s how I imagine you there
I saw the empty house
Where you tried to come home
But you didn’t stay very long
I guess you kept searching for where you belong
And all I can do is keep singing for you
Pining for someone who I never knew
Hard to believe it was over before it began
I just wasn’t part of your plan
Barbara Ann
Too late for hello
You can never know me
Sad I waited just a little bit too long
To try and get in touch with you
And all I can do is keep singing for you
Pining for someone who I never knew
Hard to believe it was over before it began
I just wasn’t part of your plan
Barbara Ann
I’ve got your hazel eyes
And a streak that is blue
They say it’s uncanny
How much I remind them of you
Words and Music by Pete Droge & Elaine Summers
Dood. You've truly stepped up your songwriting game with this one. You so beautifully set up the groove and then introduced delicious twists and turns to keep the journey fresh. The expansive strings during the bridge really made me travel and brought a tear to my eye. Top notch, work, pal. Made me miss my own mom named Barbara...
So many emotions felt in this song for me. It is simply beautiful.
