YOU CALLED ME KID - DEMO 01
Regular readers of Love Songs Etc know that I wrote “You Called Me Kid” for my dad after he passed away. I dedicate the song to both Mom and Dad, as well as to all parental figures of every variety. So, whether you are an adoptive parent like my folks or biological, step, foster, grand, or any other kind, this song is for you.
I recorded this demo of “You Called Me Kid” on August 25, 2019.
(Paid subscribers can download the track—AIFF or MP3—by visiting the rarities page.)
At the time I cut this track, my routine was to record a super simple acoustic demo once I felt a song was complete. Typically, I’d just plop down in front of a mic (or two) and knock it out. No click track. No fixes. No edits. No comping. Just guitar and vocal. Often, like I did here, I’d add a bit of double tracking to sweeten the sound, but that’s as far as I’d go production-wise. I just wanted to get the song down in a basic form so I could listen back and get a sense of whether it was really done or not.
In this case, it was done. There is a tiny bit of vocal phrasing that I eventually ironed out on the second line of the chorus and on the “You close your eyes…” line in the third verse, but other than that, the lyrics and phrasing from this demo stuck.
For the record version I approached the guitar slightly differently. Rather than strum with a pick, I used my fingers, resulting in a mellower tone.
I’ll have more to share about the writing and recording of “You Called Me Kid” in future posts. Until then…
You can find the single everywhere digital music is served.
