Always loved this song! What a cool story. We all have friends and then we all have a friend that we can count on at any time for any thing. Mr. McCready sounds like both. Thank you both for sharing that bond and memories.
Great groove and great story! That McCready is a solid egg. I too opened up for Johnny Cash! First show playing with Beck on tour was in Austin Texas opening for the man in super dark grey....I mean BLACK! Keep the tales coming bud.
There's a film called 'The Battery' that was the first film by writer/director Jeremy Gardner that he made after borrowing $6000 from friends that essentially launched his career. $6000 seems to be the magic number for getting peoples vision out there!
Loved hearing the demo as well, 'So I am over you' has always been one of my favorites on the album. Love hearing how it came together.
I did not mention in the piece that we did not end up spending all the money. We came in under budget!!! Glad to hear that you loved hearing the demo. I've always enjoyed hearing early versions of songs too.
Your recollections are so vivid Pete. This song is such a good demonstration of both how easy and difficult writing a powerful song can be. You’re working in a very tight, very simple harmonic context. And yet, it’s a perfect canvas for a gifted songwriter, such a a yourself, to set a lyrical and melodic mood that allows a listener experience their own emotions. That’s the gift of a great song.
Pete thanks for sharing! Love this tune. The vocals have a great presence on this recording. I used to jam to this song on repeat back in the day ---learning those solo bits :)
Great tune. I love the bass line too. It can make or break a song if it's not right. Great story Pete. Love the story about the SRV Strat. Next time I out there I'd love to see it. What a great memory. Cheers.
Great story. 1993 was a crazy pivotal year - must have been something going on in the stars. (It was the year I moved to London - for one year - then moved back for good in 1998.) I also ended up working (briefly) at Bear Creek Studios 1997, joining shortly after they finished recording 'The Color and The Shape'. It was a very cool experience. Loving your posts, Pete!
Good stuff! Amazing how life rolls along, and does it's thing. There's been way too many great stories start out of the back of someplace like a pizza shop. Some cool gestures went on. Creative activity is wonderful, and part of the joy is all the relationships than come in...help..augment. Those relationships don't play a single note, or write a single lyric. But they seem to weave magic over everything. A guitar lending a special tone. Friend saying, "Keep it!" That's beautiful stuff. To most people Mike McCready is a face in a video, or on an arena stage. But he's been your friend. I think I'm at a point in life where I cherish hearing about the kindness of friendship over creative details, at times. More great stuff, Pete! Be well always!
Listened to Necktie Second, and particularly So I Am Over You on repeat the summer of my freshman year of college, riding around with my friends, trying to find people to buy us beer. Love the backstory and this demo version. Thanks for all the great music 🌅🌟
I went looking for Beautiful Girl, didn't know it was from a movie, and ended up with Find A Door and basically went nuts over it, despite the absence of "Girl". I got Necktie Seconds a few years later. Great stories, Pete. Thanks.

Thanks, Brian!

I was at that show!!! EMO's 1994!!!
Talk about a great first show!!!
I’d love to. Thanks for the offer! 🙄
That would be worth the airfare. Thanks Pete.

Hi Peter-
I've told that story often over years... so it is seared in my memory.
Thanks for the kind and articulate words about the songwriting. Means a lot coming from you!

Thanks, Doug... Joe Hadlock did a great job on the mix on the demo. On the record, that's Brendan on the lead bits. They add so much.

yeah.. I love Sean's bass line too. Next time you are here we'll pull out the Strat and you can crank it up!

Hard to believe it was 30 years ago!!!
I didn't know you worked at Bear Creek!!! Great studio!!!
Glad you are loving the posts.
That story should be made into a movie it’s so good! And everyone should have a friend like McCready too
Hi BroGreg! You wanna write the screenplay?
Great version! Looking forward to more of these demos.
Glad you dig this version, Jeff. I think the next demos coming up are from Spacey and Shakin. Stay tuned!

Roger all that, Cory. Well put! You be well too.

Hi Futureman 7... Glad I could be the soundtrack to your juvenile delinquency! :)
Love this- still one of my favorites!
Thanks, Debbie!
Now I'm going to have this song (So I Am Over You) stuck in my head all day. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Hey Hawk n Roll Songbird (love that name)...I've had the song stuck in my head too!

Hi Dean... Happy to share the stories. It's been fun for me.
