it's great to see that you're "back". Many of your songs resonated with me very, very deeply and it was sad and worrying that you seemed to be so ill. Take care, don't go too fast and please keep writing, playing and singing these unbelievable gems you blessed our world with!
Great glimpse into the past. Looked like an AKG 'The Tube' or C12 Reissue in the voc booth, and wow, unless it was the 4:3 video stretched here, never seen an outboard rack angled like that! Then the 2xStuder 820's, MCI or Sony 1/4"....and was that an '86 or '87 Amana microwave?
You cracked me up with the microwave gag. Super funny!!!
It was "The Tube" AKG... that's what we used for vocals for much of the album. It paired nicely with my voice even though there were plenty more expensive and fancy mics around.
The Studers were 827s I think. Not sure about the 1/4" machine. And yeah... that rack of outboard was to die for... great studio all around.
Not a lot of love for 'The Tube' back then, but I actually have one that was broken and gathering dust around Pure Audio years ago. Had it fixed up electronically, and it's great now. Stripped off the weird crappy military green paint, now it's a nice dark brass shell. AKG's current C12 VR is identical, I believe.
Cool, amazing stuff, Pete! I had never actually SEEN Brendan O'Brien. Maybe he's elusive. I love feeling the vibe through you, and your obvious love in revisiting your history. I can feel that, for sure! Whether it's in music, words, pain, phot, etc. I appreciate when artists can make me feel something. Thanks for that! Be well and enjoy spring on the way, and hope you're feeling well.
I very vividly remember hearing 'So I am Over You' for the first time. It was a sunny evening in the north of the Netherlands, 1995, when it came on my car radio. Bought the CD the next day, which of course featured the single 'If You Don't Love Me' that I liked as well!
Hi Netraam- That's so cool that you have that memory. I too have songs where I remember where I was the first time I heard them. Petty's "Running Down a Dream" comes to mind.... driving southbound on I-5 in Seattle.
Doubled vocal on the chorus FTW. Random bit: My bass player was added to a threesome playing golf in Los Angeles. One of the players ended up being Brendan O'Brien ---and it was like: "Uh, I know who you are!"
Thanks, Pete! That was fun. I love the whole vibe of the few recording studios I’ve been graced to visit. It brings up a memory of the one and only time I recorded…try not to laugh, it was short-lived. I did the vocals in a shower. (I forgot - there was one time I did vocals on an ad with Mary Linn and the producer said I did great. Don’t get me started on the client. But that’s a story for another day…)
That’s not the funny part since I get it that if you can’t afford a studio a shower isn’t bad.
Years later I’m working in my upstairs office through the dressing room at the Aladdin, and I hear the song…Mark Adler and Steve Reischman are blaring the tape at full volume with the whole staff in the building - show day or staff meeting, I’m not sure. I was red faced, mortified and laughing all at once running down the stairs…I wonder where that tape is, and marvel at what it must have taken Steve to find it and pull that off 😂❤️
I cannot wait to hear the demo! Thanks so much for sharing the walk through.
I can remember looking at Southern Tracks super-crap website (WAY back when), looking through the equipment and microphone list and dreaming what it would be like to play there.
That piece of time and that place in the history of music was quite a thing.
I am thankful you were one of the ones that got to bring your songs to life there.
If you don't love me is such a classic underrated song of 90s. I luv that song!
I remember buying Necktie Second and Matthew Sweet's - Girlfriend CD on the same day. Two classics.
Hi Buzzy, that's cool... Necktie was in good company... Girlfriend is a classic, for sure!
It’s great to see that it was an exciting time for you and Elaine back in 93. The music you wrote and recorded was top shelf! Love the stories
Neat glimpse into history. I think I'm somehow surprised at how much it looks like a school.
Like a school of ROCK! :)

Thanks for the sweet note, Netraam. Appreciate it.

I told Elaine about your microwave gag and she laughed as hard as I did. Funny stuff!

Glad you can feel the love in all this stuff. It has been a total labor of love. It's a ton of work getting it all together, but totally worth it.
And thanks for the well wishes.

Indeed, those doubled vocals do add a nice lift to the chorus. Kudos to Brendan for that call.
Great producer... and a pretty good golfer too. :)
Find someone who looks at you like Pete looks at Brendan O’Brien.
Hi Brian- That's sweet of you to say. :)
A “record” is a universe apart from a demo. You’re right. You know it when you hear it.
Hi Peter! I'm posting the demo next week and while it is solid it does not have the same magical quality this version does.
I love that song.
Thanks, Lea.
Great video history, there, Pete. As I once mentioned to you, that song got me through the toughest stretch of my life. Many thanks again.
Thanks, Daniel... it's nice to hear that the song was meaningful.

❤️🔥
Thanks, Sally... glad you found the tour fun. It's fun for me to look back at it!
I'd love to hear your ad vocals one day!
Ron Stephens might actually still have it...😂❤️

Thanks, Jeff. I hope the demo is worth the wait. It's pretty interesting to hear the differences.
