On this day, twenty-five years ago, I released my third album, Spacey and Shakin’ on Epic/57 Records. We’ll celebrate all month with rarities and live performance videos. To begin, I share this video performance of the album closer, “Blindly.”
“Blindy” is an outlier on Spacey and Shakin’. No bashy drums. No fuzz tone guitars. Just a tender, little intimate song.
I remember the night I wrote it. I had recently moved into my home on Vashon Island. After years of city living and life on tour, I was still getting used to the peace and quiet of the island. I recall sitting in my living room, looking out the sliding glass doors, and seeing the moon behind the trees. Sometimes it’s as easy as singing what you see.
The trees are hiding moonlight
The clouds a lid screwed on tight
I know it would have been more grammatically correct to say, “The clouds are a lid screwed on tight,” but that did not fit the rhythm of the melody, so I employed a bit of rock and roll lyric speak. Rules be damned! That’s one thing I love about songwriting. You can get away with anything if it sings right and gets the idea across.
This performance takes place in the very spot where the song was written some twenty-six years ago. The song still resonates with me. I hope you dig it. To check out the record version, listen to Spacey and Shakin’ HERE.
