On this day in 2009, my birth mother, Barbara Ann Thomas, passed away.
This coming Sunday, July 20th, would have been her seventy-seventh birthday.
With these anniversaries in mind, it’s an opportune time to release my forthcoming album’s next single, “Song for Barbara Ann.” (Single drops on July 24.)
We did not plan the timing this way, however. Originally, the song was set to be released in April. However, due to my fatigue issues, I’ve had to push the release schedule back twice. Doing so caused the release date to coincide with these anniversaries. (It also worked out so “You Called Me Kid” landed on the eve of Father’s Day weekend.)
“Song for Barbara Ann” is one of two songs on Fade Away Blue that speak to the complicated grief I experienced when I learned that Barb had died just months before I attempted to contact her. The other, “Lonely Mama,” was released as a 45rpm 7” last year on Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready’s HockeyTalkter Records.
Here is a live video of “Lonely Mama” from my recent show at McCabe’s in Los Angeles. (Video shot by Jason Kerepesi of the State of Love and Trust - A Pearl Jam Podcast.)

After this performance, I explained to the audience how missing meeting Barb was such a significant event in my life that it warranted not one but two songs. Then I played “Song for Barbara Ann.” It wasn’t videotaped, though. Even if it were, I probably wouldn’t share it now anyway. I don’t want your first impression to be a live version recorded on a phone when there’s a fully realized album version in the can.
Premium subscribers can stream or download “Song for Barbara Ann” by clicking the link found beyond the paywall below.
Everyone else will have to wait until next Thursday, July 24th, when the song and its accompanying video are released.
And now… without further ado… for my fantabulous premium subscribers… I’m pleased to share with you the keystone song of Fade Away Blue, “Song for Barbara Ann.”
Here comes the paywall in 3… 2… 1…. PAYWALL!
Thank you for being a premium subscriber.

Thanks, Steve-O. It's a special song for me. Co-written by one Elaine Sumemers I should add.
I'm just hearing this one for the first time. Beautiful song.
