Here is a demo recording of “Sad Clown,” the first song on the Droge & Summers Blend EP, Volume One.
I found this demo in a folder called “2003 Demos.” The other two songs in the folder were “Wicked World” and “Plans.” The former was included on the second Blend EP, Volume Two. The latter is an outtake that will be part of The Droge & Summers Blend Sessions collection, AKA Volume Three. Coming soon on Puzzle Tree Records!
Fun Fact #1
The aforementioned “Wicked World” and “Plans” were both recorded by Jaime Wyatt back in the early 2000s when she was signed to Lakeshore Records.
Fun Fact #2
Jaime’s version of “Plans” was featured in the 2005 film Undiscovered starring Ashley Simpson.
Fun Fact #3
Jaime’s version of “Wicked World” appeared in the 2007 film Feast of Love starring Morgan Freeman and Greg Kinnear. My song “Under the Waves” was featured in the movie as well.
Fun Fact #4
Jaime’s career is going great. She has a couple of new singles out. They’re from her upcoming release on New West Records. Here is the video for the lead single.
Here is an old, trippy photo I took of Jaime during a session at The Puzzle Tree.
But none of this has anything to do with the Sad Clown demo. What can I say about this demo? I dig it. It’s got spirit. I’m guessing it was made right after we finished writing the song. Sounds like it was made in a hurry. In a good way.
Sounds like my 1973 Gibson J-55 getting smashed through one of my Summit MPC-100A tube mic pre/compressors. Love that sweet tube distortion!
Later I experimented with alternate guitar approaches but ultimately I stuck to what I call the ‘lawnmower’ approach to rhythm guitar. I’m strumming and mowing everything in my path.
Here’s how the track ended up sounding on the record. I’ll save you a trip to your favorite streamer.

That demo is great. the lawnmower rhythm drives the song and gives it sweet beachy vibes.
Love this demo!
