Back on 03/31/23, I released the single “Only Have Eyes.” It’s an outtake from The Droge & Summers Blend. Blend, as I call it, was my side project with Elaine Summers. We were active from 2008 until 2015. We released two EPs. We aborted work on a third EP when my chronic fatigue issues began in the fall of 2015. (I’m happy to report that my energy is continuing to improve.)
“Rooftop” is another Blend outtake. We’ll combine the outtakes and all the songs from Volume One and Volume Two into one collection called The Complete Blend Sessions. Look for that release in late Summer or early Fall.
For whatever reason, “Rooftop” did not make it onto either of the original five-song Blend EPs.
Volume One (2009) had the micro-hit “Two of the Lucky Ones.” In Zombieland, Emma Stone & Jesse Eisenberg slow danced to the song. “Wonder” from Volume Two (2014) was featured in the pilot for CW’s iZombie.
Neither song was written with zombies in mind.
“Rooftop” was written with a film in mind, however. When asked to write something for Columbia Pictures’ Catch & Release (2006), Elaine Summers and I penned two songs. One was “Rooftop” and the other was the title track to my 2006 album Under the Waves. Neither song made it into the film. Guess you could say it was one that got away.
While the song was written with Jennifer Garner’s character from Catch and Release in mind, when I sing the song, I think of my birth mother, Barb. I never met Barb. She passed away in 2009, just months before I decided to try and connect with her.
Barb especially comes to mind in the chorus:
I could never reach you
You were always out of sight
I will never hold you
You’re the stardust in the light
Drift away, drift away
Songs that deal directly with my experiences as an adoptee are in the cue. I’ve been working with the same team that brought you “Fading Fast” on those tunes, and we are considering releasing an EP comprised of all adoption-themed songs. I reserve the right to change my mind on this. The alternate plan is to combine the adoption songs with all other contenders and make one long record. Double vinyl, anyone?
If the adoption EP comes to be, it will be more than just an EP. It will also be a quest to find my birth father. More on all that later.
For now, “Rooftop” will be available on 06/02/23 wherever you find digital music.
