Welcome to launch week, day five!
For launch week I’m posting everyday, Monday thru Friday.
Then on Saturday, for the New Moon, I’ll post a special bonus link where paid subscribers can stream or download an advance copy of my new single, “Fading Fast.”
After launch week you can expect a new post every week or ten days or so.
This demo of “Mr. Jade” has a much mellower feel than the fully-produced version that appears as the lead track on my sophomore album, 1996’s Find a Door.
With its classic boom-boom-crack groove, this track really shines with the Sinners at the helm. It was a staple in our live set back in the day. Here we are performing the song on VH-1:
“Mr. Jade” was the lead single from the album. While it did chart at AAA radio it did not come close to matching the radio success my debut album Necktie Second enjoyed.
Fun fact- the music video for the song, directed by the great Martyn Atkins, was almost used in the film Jerry Maguire. The video was to play on a TV in the background of a scene taking place in a hotel room. Unfortunately, the scene ended up on the cutting room floor. Talk about one that got away! Oh well, it’s not like the movie was a hit. It made a paltry $273 million at a the box office and only received five Academy Award nominations.
Of the handful of music videos I’ve made over the years, “Mr. Jade” is my favorite. The live performance footage was filmed—on actual film—at Pike Place Market in Seattle. B-roll shots were captured near my home on Vashon Island. We even rented a sea plane! In a few shots I wore a hat. Unfortunately, it was too small and caused my forehead to fall asleep and get all tingly.
Peace & Love Songs,
Pete

Thanks so much for the demo. So good. Brings a tear to my eye.
Would love to hear how you and Brendan got hooked up.
Your stuff and his touch was just magic, but it is really cool to hear how much magic the stuff alone has.
Trying this again!
I’ve long thought that a well-written song can be played in any style, sung by anyone, and still shine. “Mr. Jade” is no exception. It takes me back to what drew me to your music in the first place. It’s easy to be “professional” it’s very difficult to be someone who writes songs that move a listener. Your batting average is unusually high Pete. I also like the demo versions — to fully fleshed out versions. The demo really highlights your incredible sense of time, something that can’t be faked. I’m inspired by what you’re doing here. I appreciate the way you pull back the curtain for us.
