Here is a rendition of my recent single, “Lonely Mama,” recorded live at Vashon Center for the Arts on March 30, 2024.
When I offered to put filmmaker John Jeffcoat on the guest list as a thank-you for his stunning work on the “Lonely Mama” music video, he offered to bring his video camera to document the show. How could I say no? He also brought his Zoom recorder to capture an audience recording.
I pondered going for a complete multi-track recording but decided to focus on the show and not complicate matters by tackling all that. Plus, I wanted to avoid the pressure of knowing the show was being multi-tracked. It would be too easy to get all up in my head worrying about how the recording was turning out. I figured the audience recording would be fine.
Thankfully, our front-of-house engineer, Martin Feveyear, had other plans. After the show, while I was busy meetin’ and greetin’, he approached with a devilish smile and said, “Pete, I don’t know how it happened, but I accidentally recorded the show into ProTools.” I was thrilled. It was the perfect scenario. I did not have to think about a live recording while performing, and we ended up with a professionally recorded multi-track session.
Live recordings are challenging. It’s hard to capture the feeling of being in the room. When Martin sent the mix for me to check out I did my best to remain hopeful. I know how critical I can be—especially with live recordings—so I was prepared to be let down. As it turned out, his mix sounded great. It captures every nuance of my performance in great detail.
For those of you who were unable to attend, I hope you enjoy this video. And for those of you who were there, I hope this serves as a memento of a very special evening.
In my intro to “Lonely Mama,” I mentioned my Uncle Rich. I was thrilled to have him in attendance. We had a wonderful visit. Connecting with him over the years has been a huge blessing. We have much in common. It’s been healing for both of us to compare notes and recognize all of the traits we share.
Rich is an excellent guitarist and songwriter. In a future post, I will share a taste of one of his latest musical endeavors. Stay tuned for that. Until then…
Peace & Love Songs,
Pete
PS: The studio version of “Lonely Mama” is out now. Find it on streamers. Or better yet, pick up a copy on 7” colored vinyl.
Truly beautiful. I was hoping for some excerpts from the show since I was unable to attend. Thanks for sharing!
Breathtaking, Pete. So full of heartache and love. Thank you so much for sharing this.
